ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that can cause issues with concentrating, finishing tasks, restlessness, and put a strain on your work, school, or social relationships.

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children, but a provider may diagnose you with ADHD in adulthood.

Approximately 13% of American teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 have ADHD. A provider is more likely to diagnose ADHD in boys than girls.

The overall prevalence of ADHD in American adults between 18 and 44 is 4.4%.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Symptoms of ADHD for all ages include:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Frequently distracted
  • Forgetting or losing things often
  • Restlessness
  • Impulsivity
  • Daydreaming
  • Issues following through with tasks or assignments
  • Disruptiveness (especially in teens)
  • Trouble fitting in socially

ADHD can affect your daily life. You may benefit from treatment if you have issues with:

  • Stress and mood levels
  • Succeeding in work or school
  • Family, friend, or romantic relationships
  • Communicating with your boss or superior
  • Organization
  • Finishing tasks or multi-tasking
  • Identifying and following through with your goals
  • Coping with grief

If left untreated, the stressors ADHD puts on your life can lead to disorders like anxiety and depression.

What are my ADHD treatment options?

After a thorough exam and assessment of any ADHD symptoms, your provider may diagnose you with predominantly inattentive presentation, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation, or combined presentation ADHD.

Medication
Adderall XR®, Concerta®, Ritalin®, and Vyvanse® are popular stimulants that help you focus.

These prescription medicines increase brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine, giving you better mental clarity and the ability to concentrate and complete tasks.

If you’d like to avoid the negative side effects that come with stimulants, like decreased appetite, sleep loss, and addiction, Qelbree® and Strattera® are nonstimulant options. They don’t contain methylphenidate or amphetamine, and their effects can last 24 hours.

Psychotherapy
Various forms of talk therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can help you develop healthy behavior management strategies, find ways to organize your life, and aid in communication with loved ones.

During psychotherapy, your provider empowers you to identify your ADHD triggers and understand how to manage your disorder day-to-day.
